Investigating the Egg Supply Chain Disruption

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has recently called for an urgent investigation by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) into the egg supply chain disruption. This disruption has been caused by a combination of factors, including increased input costs, Avian Influenza (AI), and the war in Ukraine. These pressures have caused a shortage of eggs in some stores for some retailers, and have put producers’ livelihoods at risk.
The NFU has been working with the government, retailers, and food businesses to address the challenges facing the poultry sector. The cost of feed raw materials has risen by 90% since 2019, according to the NFU feed raw material index. This is before energy-intensive manufacturing costs are taken into account. By comparison, egg prices as measured by Defra have only increased by 35%.
The NFU is calling for an urgent investigation into the egg supply chain disruption in order to protect producers’ livelihoods. The NFU has also called for the government to take action to address the underlying causes of the disruption, such as increased input costs, AI, and the war in Ukraine.
The NFU is also calling for the government to take steps to ensure that egg prices reflect the true cost of production. The NFU believes that egg prices should reflect the increased cost of feed raw materials, as well as energy-intensive manufacturing costs. This would ensure that producers are able to make a living wage and that the egg supply chain is not disrupted in the future.
The NFU is also calling for the government to provide support to producers in the poultry sector. This could include financial assistance, such as grants and subsidies, as well as measures to reduce the cost of production, such as tax breaks and reduced energy costs.
The NFU is also calling for the government to take steps to ensure that the egg supply chain is not disrupted in the future. This could include measures to reduce the risk of AI, such as improved biosecurity measures, as well as measures to reduce the impact of the war in Ukraine, such as increased trade with the region.

  • This is a very important issue that needs to be addressed. The government needs to take action to protect producers’ livelihoods and ensure that the egg supply chain is not disrupted in the future. I think using machine learning could help to reduce the risk of AI and other disruptions.
